Name the system you tested
An API experiment and a consumer-interface observation are different measurement methods. Record the API endpoint, model identifier when available, tool configuration, and prompt for programmatic tests. Record the product surface and relevant settings for manual observations. A common model name does not establish equivalent retrieval, context, or presentation. Describe results in language that matches the method: 'observed in this API test' or 'observed in this ChatGPT search session.' This small distinction prevents a research dashboard from making a broader claim than its collection process can actually support.
Understand configured retrieval
A programmatic workflow can specify tools and instructions that shape the answer. OpenAI's web-search API documentation describes search capabilities, while its ChatGPT help describes the consumer experience. Read both before assuming one is a proxy for the other. Preserve tool settings and any system instructions in your experiment record. If you restrict search to selected domains, the result is useful for a constrained task but unsuitable for measuring open-ended competitive discovery. Similarly, asking the model to mention your business changes the question being tested and belongs in a diagnostic experiment.
Design matched exploratory checks
Hypothetical example: a team runs a buyer question through a configured web-search API and asks the same question in a fresh consumer search session. One answer cites the company and the other does not. This is evidence of disagreement between two observations, not proof that either implementation is broken. The team saves both outputs and checks the sources. It repeats a small matched subset to understand whether differences are consistent before deciding how to use the API series in its reporting. It keeps the results separate throughout the process.
Validate extraction and classification
Programmatic access can improve repeatability of storage, but it does not remove the need for validation. Check whether source annotations are extracted completely, whether redirected domains are normalized correctly, and whether brand aliases are matched accurately. Preserve raw responses for debugging. Sample classifications manually after changing parsers or models. Exclude failed requests from visibility denominators while reporting their number. A precise-looking API result can still be based on a biased prompt set, incorrect identity matching, or a tool configuration that differs substantially from the buyer experience you intended to study.
Choose the method for the decision
Use API experiments for repeatable, explicitly scoped research and workflow evaluation. Use permitted consumer observations when presentation or that specific product experience matters. Use platform reports for the measurements they officially expose. A useful dashboard can display all three with clear labels instead of forcing them into a universal rank. Explain coverage limits to stakeholders and retain methodology versions. The strongest result is one that can be reproduced within its stated scope, inspected at the response level, and connected to a concrete content decision without implying knowledge of every user's answer. Publish the collection method beside charts so viewers do not have to discover this distinction in a footnote.
Label API experiments honestly and avoid presenting them as direct measurements of every ChatGPT user experience.
